China strongly opposes the U.S.’s unilateral sanctions on Cuba and its interference in Cuban internal affairs under the pretext of “human rights,” a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday.
The spokesperson urged the United States to end its blockade and sanctions on Cuba without delay.
At a regular press briefing, spokesperson Lin Jian responded to a question regarding U.S. sanctions on senior Cuban officials, criticizing the U.S. for maintaining an illegal blockade for over six decades, which he said has caused immense hardship for the Cuban people. He emphasized that the sanctions should be lifted, not intensified.
Lin reiterated China’s support for Cuba in choosing its own development path and in protecting its sovereignty and national dignity.
He called on the U.S. to remove Cuba from the list of “state sponsors of terrorism” and to lift all related restrictions immediately.
If the United States truly values human rights, Lin added, it should examine its own record of rights abuses, including those at Guantanamo Bay and in other parts of the world.
