Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with European Council President Antonio Costa on Wednesday, with both leaders committing to deepen cooperation and uphold multilateralism in global affairs.
Costa highlighted that both the European Union (EU) and China share a commitment to multilateralism. He expressed the EU’s readiness to work alongside China based on mutual respect, seeking to overcome differences, improve mutual understanding, and jointly tackle global challenges.
Reaffirming the EU’s position, Costa emphasized its continued adherence to the one-China policy and voiced support for making the upcoming EU-China leaders’ meeting a full success.
Wang Yi, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated that China considers Europe a crucial pillar in a multipolar world. He affirmed China’s long-standing support for European integration and welcomed the EU’s efforts to enhance its strategic autonomy and global influence.
Wang expressed China’s willingness to enhance coordination with the EU in preparation for the leaders’ meeting. He stressed that as the international landscape grows more turbulent, China and the EU must increase unity and coordination, serving as stabilizing forces.
He also underscored the need for both sides to respect each other’s core interests, build mutual trust, and support one another’s progress.
Additionally, the two leaders exchanged views on the ongoing Ukraine crisis.
