Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and President of the UN Security Council for the current month, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has stressed the urgent need to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. He termed the issue a longstanding source of conflict and tension between India and Pakistan.
Speaking to the media in New York after assuming the Council presidency, he called on the Security Council, particularly its permanent members, to take concrete action toward implementing their own resolutions on Kashmir.
Asim Iftikhar stated that Pakistan has taken on the Security Council presidency with a deep sense of duty and commitment. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to the core principles of the UN Charter, including peaceful dispute resolution, sovereign equality, adherence to international law, and support for multilateralism.
He announced that during its presidency, Pakistan will host two key events. The first is a high-level open debate on promoting international peace and security through multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of disputes, with a focus on cooperation between the UN and regional organizations such as the OIC.
Additionally, Pakistan will lead the Council’s quarterly open debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue. He noted that the meeting has been elevated to the ministerial level in light of the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
