Chinese FM holds phone talks with Iranian counterpart to discuss the ongoing regional tensions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a senior official of the Communist Party of China, held a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday.
During the call, Araghchi updated Wang on the regional situation, condemning recent Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities as dangerous violations of international law. He stressed that Iran was compelled to respond and noted that although a ceasefire with Israel has been reached, the overall situation remains volatile. Real dialogue, he added, can only start once Israel halts its aggression.
Araghchi mentioned that foreign ministers from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) had condemned the actions of the U.S. and Israel. He expressed appreciation for China’s consistent support for Iran’s legitimate stance and welcomed deeper communication, urging China to play a more active role in easing regional tensions.
In response, Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. He pointed out that China was among the first to condemn the U.S. attacks, emphasizing that strikes on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards are serious breaches of the UN Charter and could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Wang voiced China’s support for Iran in protecting its sovereignty and security, while also advocating for a ceasefire, the resumption of normal civilian life, and efforts to de-escalate the broader regional crisis.
He commended the OIC for its united stance on calling for peace and expressed China’s readiness to support the UN Security Council in fulfilling its role in maintaining global peace and security.
Wang also thanked Iran for its assistance in safely evacuating Chinese nationals and urged the Iranian authorities to continue safeguarding Chinese citizens, institutions, and diplomatic missions in the country.
