China sends 24th medical team to Madagascar which will join the eight members from the 23rd medical team to carry out a two year assignment.
A new Chinese medical team, the 24th from China to serve in Madagascar, departed from Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, on Wednesday. The team is expected to arrive in the East African nation on the afternoon of June 12, local time.
This latest team includes 24 medical professionals from 18 healthcare institutions in Gansu. Their specialties span 13 fields such as general surgery, orthopedics, and thoracic surgery. They will join eight remaining members from the 23rd medical team already in Madagascar to collectively carry out a two-year international medical aid assignment.
Gansu Province has been sending medical teams to Madagascar since 1975. Over the past five decades, 24 such teams made up of 719 personnel have been deployed, delivering care to over 4.6 million patients and performing more than 130,000 surgeries.
Liang Weidong, an orthopedic physician at Lanzhou’s No. 1 People’s Hospital and a returning member of the 24th team, noted that Madagascar’s healthcare and living conditions are modest. He emphasized the importance of adapting to local conditions while offering the highest standard of medical care possible.
Team leader Li Xingxiang, who also heads the foreign cooperation office of Gansu’s health commission, highlighted Madagascar’s limited access to healthcare. He said Chinese teams have consistently overcome communication and logistical barriers, gaining the respect of local communities for their dedication, skills, and medical ethics.
