Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who is leading a high-level parliamentary delegation, asked the United Nations Secretary-General to take an active role in easing tensions between Pakistan and India, encouraging dialogue, and ensuring the revival of the Indus Waters Treaty.
In a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York, Bilawal particularly highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive dialogue on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which he said is central to achieving long-term peace in South Asia.
The delegation also briefed the Secretary-General on the humanitarian fallout of suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, along with concerns over India’s unprovoked aggression and violations of the UN Charter and international law.
Secretary-General Guterres welcomed Pakistan’s desire for peace and reaffirmed the UN’s strong commitment to upholding peace, urging all sides to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic channels.
He reiterated the United Nations’ support for all initiatives that promote de-escalation and peaceful conflict resolution in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
