Pakistan, China Green Summit boosts global sustainability ties showcasing both countries commitment for a greener future.
The “1st Pakistan-China Green and Low-Carbon Summit 2025” underscored the urgent need for global collaboration to accelerate the transition to a green economy, focusing on innovation, sustainable development, and partnerships as key factors driving change.
The summit, organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (OIC-COMSTECH) and the Sino-International Entrepreneurs Federation (SIEF), took place at the OIC-COMSTECH Secretariat in Islamabad on Monday.
With the theme “Green Economy Leadership: Catalyzing Innovation for Sustainable Development,” the event brought together policymakers, scientists, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and diplomats from various OIC member countries to promote sustainability and strengthen green innovation partnerships.
A major development at the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between COMSTECH and SIEF and the inauguration of the COMSTECH-SIEF Coordination Office for Green Technologies, which will facilitate knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and joint green innovation initiatives between the Islamic world and China.
In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of COMSTECH, emphasized that the shift to a green economy is not just an option but a vital necessity for sustainable progress. He called for stronger collaboration between OIC countries and China in areas like climate change mitigation, food security, water management, health innovation, and green energy technologies.
Engr. Dr. Shahid Mahmud, Senior Advisor to COMSTECH, stressed the critical need for a green economy to ensure humanity’s survival, pinpointing key areas such as energy, food, water, healthcare, and security for China-OIC collaboration.
In his keynote address, Mr. Tony Dong, Chief Representative of SIEF, identified three key areas of opportunity: combining China’s photovoltaic materials with Pakistan’s smart grid technology, creating green building standards that align with Islamic architecture, and empowering youth through climate-tech programs.
The summit featured panel discussions, including one on “Transitioning to a Green Economy: Opportunities and Challenges,” moderated by Ambassador Naghmana A. Hashmi, and another on “Science, Technology, and Innovation as Drivers of Circular Economy,” moderated by Ms. Seema A. Khan.
An interactive session on building a roadmap for OIC Green Economy Cooperation emphasized joint research programs, climate innovation hubs, and harmonized green standards across member states.
The event concluded with a commitment to advancing sustainable partnerships and the global green agenda, followed by a networking lunch to explore further collaborations. This summit marked a historic step toward deeper cooperation between China and the Islamic world, fostering a greener future.
