Chinese President Xi orders all out rescue efforts after Sichuan landslide with prioritizing saving lives of people and assessing disaster risks.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an all-out search and rescue operation to minimize casualties following a landslide that buried 10 houses and left over 30 people missing in Sichuan Province on Saturday.
As General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi issued the directive after the landslide struck Jinping Village in Junlian County, Yibin City, at approximately 11:50 a.m.
He emphasized the need for proper post-disaster management, urging enhanced monitoring and early warning systems. He also stressed that rescue efforts should follow scientific methods while preventing further disasters.
Xi instructed all local authorities and relevant departments to intensify efforts in identifying hidden disaster risks and workplace safety hazards. He called for decisive measures to prevent major disasters and accidents, ensuring the safety of people’s lives and property.
In a separate directive, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, called for immediate action to rescue those trapped, investigate the cause of the landslide, assess geological risks in the surrounding areas, relocate those in danger, and prevent further incidents.
Vice Premier Liu Guozhong, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, has been sent to Sichuan to oversee and guide the rescue efforts.
