Punjab launches electric bus service to boost green transition and facilitate the population who use public transport.
Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has launched the province’s first fully electric bus service in Lahore. The new fleet comprises buses with a seating capacity of 30 and the ability to accommodate up to 80 passengers.
These electric buses come with advanced features, including GPS tracking, Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, and ramps for passengers with disabilities. To enhance safety, the buses are equipped with anti-slip flooring and surveillance cameras to prevent harassment. Additionally, nine dedicated charging stations have been set up, allowing each bus to travel 250 kilometers on a full charge.
A digital wallet and card system will be introduced to enable cashless transactions. Initially, the electric bus service will run on a 21-kilometer route from the Railway Station to Green Town.
The service is scheduled to commence by mid-February, with buses arriving every nine minutes. A total of 42 modern bus shelters will be constructed to accommodate an estimated 17,000 passengers daily.
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister also reviewed plans to install solar-powered fans, water coolers, and surveillance cameras at bus stations. She emphasized the importance of specialized training for the 70 bus drivers operating the new service.
Furthermore, discussions were held regarding the potential introduction of electric taxis in Punjab to further enhance sustainable transportation in the province.
