Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald J. Trump.
During the call, President Xi congratulated Trump on his reelection as U.S. President and emphasized the importance of their interactions. He expressed hope for a positive start in China-U.S. relations under the new U.S. administration and affirmed his commitment to advancing bilateral ties from a fresh beginning.
President Xi highlighted that both China and the United States are great nations striving to improve the lives of their people. Acknowledging the differences between the two nations due to their distinct circumstances, President Xi underscored the need to respect each other’s core interests and major concerns while seeking appropriate resolutions. He stressed that the Taiwan issue is integral to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging the U.S. to approach it with caution. Xi described the bilateral economic relationship as inherently mutually beneficial and advised against confrontation or conflict. He advocated for cooperation based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and shared benefits, calling for practical measures to keep the partnership on a stable, sustainable path.
President-elect Trump thanked Xi for his congratulations and expressed his appreciation for their strong relationship. He emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and expressed his eagerness to meet Xi soon. Trump noted that as two of the world’s most significant nations, the U.S. and China should maintain a lasting friendship and collaborate to promote global peace.
The leaders also exchanged views on key international and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Both leaders agreed to establish a strategic communication channel to maintain regular contact on major issues of mutual interest.
