China and the Philippines convened the 10th meeting of the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) on the South China Sea in Xiamen, Fujian Province, on Thursday. Both sides agreed on the need to manage maritime disputes and differences constructively.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong and Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Maria Theresa Lazaro co-chaired the dialogue, engaging in an open and productive discussion about the South China Sea situation.
China expressed serious concerns to the Philippines over recent maritime infringements and provocations, as well as the amplification of maritime disputes. China urged adherence to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), emphasizing dialogue and cooperation to manage disputes and restore stable bilateral relations.
Both parties reaffirmed the value of maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea, recognizing its significance for the shared interests of the region, including China and the Philippines.
They also agreed to enhance maritime communication, resolve disputes amicably, and pursue collaboration in areas like coast guard operations, marine science, technology, and environmental protection.
