Pakistan China High Tech Agricultural Cooperation with the aim of tackling food insecurity.
A groundbreaking agricultural project, developed through the collaboration of Chinese experts and Pakistani researchers, is underway in Punjab, Pakistan, with the goal of addressing food insecurity both locally and globally. This innovative initiative spans over 5,000 acres (2,000+ hectares) and is set to transform the country’s agricultural sector on an unprecedented scale.
The project is centered around achieving food security by incorporating cutting-edge technologies and leveraging collaborative expertise. Key components include advanced irrigation systems and the latest agricultural machinery to increase efficiency.
At the core of this initiative is the integration of both imported Chinese technology and locally produced equipment to maximize agricultural yields while reducing costs. “By utilizing Chinese technology, especially in mechanization, we have introduced advanced tractors that operate more efficiently and on a larger scale compared to traditional models,” said Sarfaraz, a farm manager.
Pakistan’s agriculture has long struggled with challenges such as poor-quality seeds, with over 60% of farmers depending on informal markets. This initiative aims to address this by creating hybrid seeds that are better suited for shifting climatic conditions.
The project extends beyond crop production to livestock and dairy farming, aiming to modernize and scale up these sectors, which remain largely underdeveloped in Pakistan. “We plan to import high-yield dairy and meat animals to boost national production,” stated Shamraiz Akram, the livestock manager.
Utilizing modern technologies, the project not only aims to enhance productivity but also create jobs and stimulate local economies through the development of supply chains. The food processing and distribution aspects are also vital, with several China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) economic zones focusing on agri-processing, creating opportunities for broader market access.
