On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed confidence that China will meet its economic growth target for the year and reiterated that the country remains a key driver of global economic growth.
Xi made these comments while meeting with leaders of prominent international economic organizations in Beijing. He acknowledged that the world is undergoing a new phase of uncertainty and change, with the global community at a pivotal moment. He reaffirmed China’s readiness to collaborate with major international economic bodies to advocate for multilateralism, foster global cooperation, support the development of the Global South, and contribute to creating a fair and inclusive world.
Leaders from organizations such as the New Development Bank, the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, and the International Monetary Fund praised China’s economic growth and achievements. They also expressed optimism about the country’s future prospects and appreciated China’s long-standing support for international economic organizations.
With rising unilateralism and protectionism in the world, leaders of major international economic organizations indicated their willingness to collaborate closely with China. They emphasized their commitment to multilateralism, free trade, and economic globalization, striving to contribute to global prosperity and create a shared future for humanity.
Xi acknowledged the challenges that economies worldwide face and stressed that all countries must work together to build an open global economy. He highlighted key opportunities in areas such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and low-carbon technologies, which could create new economic growth drivers and facilitate the cross-border movement of knowledge, technology, and human resources.
Xi pointed out that, after more than four decades of rapid development, China’s economy is now in a stage of high-quality growth and accounts for approximately 30% of global economic growth.
Xi emphasized China’s open and inclusive development strategy, affirming that the country will continue to embrace wider global openness. He stressed the importance of aligning with high-standard international economic rules, fostering a market-oriented business environment, and advancing a new, more open economic system to provide new opportunities and benefits for other countries.
The Chinese president invited international economic organizations to continue participating in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, promoting global modernization through peaceful development, mutually beneficial cooperation, and shared prosperity.
Xi also expressed hope that the United States will work with China to steer their bilateral relations in a positive, stable, and sustainable direction. He criticized tariff wars, trade disputes, and technological rivalries, emphasizing that these actions contradict economic laws and history, with no winners in sight. He reiterated China’s willingness to engage in dialogue, expand cooperation, and manage differences with the U.S.
