Xi’s meetings with world leaders highlight China’s role as a stabilizing force and a key promoter of development.
Chinese President Xi Jinping held multiple meetings with world leaders during the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing China’s influential and stabilizing role amid global geopolitical uncertainties, as well as its significant contributions to international development.
During discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Xi noted that as the world’s second and third largest economies, China and Germany wield considerable global influence. He urged both nations to view their relationship with a long-term, strategic outlook.
Xi emphasized Germany’s key role as a partner in advancing China’s modernization and promised to continue offering market opportunities to German businesses.
Highlighting their integrated economic interests, Xi described bilateral cooperation as a path to mutual development and a shared future. He underscored China’s stance of resolving the EU’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles through dialogue, encouraging Germany’s leadership on this issue.
In a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Xi affirmed the strategic significance of China-France relations, noting both countries’ maturity and global influence. He expressed China’s willingness to work with France to enhance China-Europe relations and world peace.
Xi, during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, advocated for a rational and balanced approach to bilateral development. He stressed the need for deeper strategic communication and trust to achieve stable, enduring ties.
With Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Xi emphasized there were no fundamental conflicts of interest between China and Australia. He called for mutual respect, equality, and efforts to find common ground, ensuring growth in their bilateral relationship.
Xi highlighted China and Australia’s shared support for economic globalization and free trade, proposing collaboration to open opportunities for mutual benefit and shared development.
Meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Xi encouraged stronger exchanges and practical cooperation, leveraging the complementary nature of their economies for comprehensive development. He congratulated Sheinbaum on becoming Mexico’s first female president and recalled his impactful 2013 visit to Mexico.
Xi also stressed the enduring friendship between China and Mexico, noting their shared views on global issues and a mutual commitment to inclusive economic globalization.
In the context of global instability, Zhu Jiejin of Fudan University highlighted that Xi’s meetings reflect China’s role as a stabilizing force amid international uncertainties and its commitment to development-driven diplomacy.
Xi’s speech at the G20’s session on combating hunger and poverty emphasized building a fair and inclusive world of shared development by channeling resources into trade, investment, and development cooperation, while fostering sustainable practices to address global challenges.
Zhu further remarked that China’s advocacy for cooperation amidst rising protectionism demonstrates its efforts to expand global partnerships and promote win-win outcomes.
Furthermore, the economist Ronnie Lins noted China’s growing impact in Latin America through trade, investment, and technology, offering alternatives to traditional reliance on Western powers. This model of mutually beneficial development within the Global South supports a new multipolar world order.
