China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has contributed to advancing vocational education and training (VET) systems in Cambodia and other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), stated a senior Cambodian official on Wednesday.
Om Romny, a secretary of state at Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport, highlighted that the BRI has played a pivotal role in enhancing VET in Cambodia and ASEAN by fostering infrastructure development, economic growth, and skills training tailored to the region’s needs.
“The BRI has bolstered technical and vocational education and training (TVET) by investing in large-scale infrastructure projects that require skilled labor, thus boosting the demand for vocational training in fields such as construction, engineering, and logistics,” Romny explained to Xinhua.
He further noted that aligning BRI projects with local labor and environmental regulations can strengthen regulatory frameworks in Cambodia and other ASEAN nations, ultimately benefiting both host countries and investors.
Regarding Cambodia’s VET development goals, Romny emphasized the country’s commitment to building a workforce that meets both national and global market demands.
