Chinese and U.S. officials recently convened in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, to discuss joint efforts in combating the online sale of counterfeit goods, as reported by China’s top market regulator on Monday.
The event, co-hosted by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), featured over 200 participants, including representatives from law enforcement, judicial bodies, industry associations, brand owners, and e-commerce platforms from both countries, according to an online statement from SAMR.
This meeting was a follow-up to a memorandum of understanding on intellectual property (IP) collaboration signed between SAMR and USPTO in Beijing earlier in April.
Key topics covered in the discussions included IP policies and regulations, methods of administrative enforcement, cooperation strategies between e-commerce platforms and rights holders, and the U.S.’s law enforcement practices.
China has been intensifying its IP protection measures to foster a more appealing environment for foreign investors and trade partners while promoting higher-level economic opening.
In line with this, SAMR issued guidelines last August to ensure equal IP protection for domestic and foreign companies. Additionally, it launched a two-year special enforcement campaign on IP protection in April.
