Zheng Qinwen: First Asian to win Olympic tennis singles gold, marking it as China’s second gold in tennis.
Chinese athletes concluded the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics with three gold and three silver medals. Zheng Qinwen’s standout achievement was winning the gold medal in women’s singles tennis at Roland Garros.
Zheng defeated Croatia’s Donna Vekic with scores of 6-2, 6-3, becoming the first Chinese and Asian player to win an Olympic singles tennis event. Consequently, her victory is China’s second tennis gold, following Li Na and Sun Tiantian’s women’s doubles win in Athens in 2004.
As a result of gold medal, Zheng expressed immense excitement and satisfaction, stating she never imagined winning gold before the Games. She acknowledged her hard work and dedication to representing China, and expressed happiness at making history.
Zheng credited Li Na as a major inspiration from her youth, noting how Li’s achievements in tennis motivated her. Further she hopes her success will inspire more young people to take up the sport and appreciate tennis.
Table Tennis
Then, Chen Meng and Sun Yingsha claimed gold and silver in the women’s singles table tennis event, with Chen defeating Sun 4-2 to retain her title from the 2021 Tokyo Games. Chinese players have dominated this event for ten consecutive Olympics.
In the women’s doubles badminton final, a “Chinese Derby” took place as Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan, the Tokyo Games silver medalists, defeated Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning 22-20, 22-15 to win their first Olympic gold.
Additionally, China’s third silver medal was earned in the mixed 4×100-meter medley relay final, with Xu Jiayu, Qin Haiyang, Zhang Yufei, and Yang Junxuan finishing in 3:57.55, breaking the Asian record and placing second behind the USA’s new world record of 3:37.43. Australia secured bronze with a time of 3:38.76.
Swimming
Further, in swimming, Zhang Yufei and Wu Qingfeng advanced to the women’s 50-meter freestyle final, with Zhang placing fourth in the semifinals with 24.24 seconds and Wu seventh with 24.40 seconds.
Boxing
Lastly, In boxing, Yang Wenlu advanced to the women’s 60-kilogram division gold medal match after defeating Wu Shih-yi of Chinese Taipei 5-0 in the semifinals.
