2024 University Alliance of the Belt & Road Forum highlights digital development with a large number of universities and educational institutions participating in the event.

The 2024 University Alliance of the Belt & Road Forum, themed “International Education Collaboration through Digital Empowerment, Green Innovation, and Shared Development,” was inaugurated at Lanzhou University on October 29.

Close to 100 experts and scholars from 21 international universities and organizations in 17 countries and regions, along with representatives from 42 Chinese universities, convened at Lanzhou University, where the Alliance’s Secretary-General led the event.

Yang Yongping, a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Lanzhou University, highlighted that since its founding in 2015, the Alliance has fostered collaboration in education, science, and culture among 184 universities across 27 Belt and Road nations. He expressed hopes for the Alliance to develop high-quality collaborative education platforms and public resources, leveraging complementary strengths in curriculum, faculty, technology, and infrastructure to support a shared future for humanity.

Furthermore, Zhang Guozhen, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Director of the Gansu Education Department, emphasized Gansu Province’s strategic location within the Belt and Road Initiative, stating that it would continue driving the growth of higher education in Northwest China.

Pakistan’s Ambassador Khalil Hashmi’s remarks

Additionally, Ambassador Khalil Hashmi of Pakistan to China and Peter Levai, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, voiced their intent to strengthen educational exchanges within the Alliance. Scholars from universities in 11 nations, including the U.S., Canada, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Egypt, discussed topics like the future of digital education partnerships and frameworks for international education cooperation.

This year, the Alliance added a new Medical Sub-Alliance to its existing five sub-alliances in fields like ecology, art, and vocational education. Four universities also joined the Alliance as new members and signed MoUs with Lanzhou University.
