President Xi’s Latin America visit strengthens global ties: FM
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Latin America was characterized as a journey of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The trip aimed to strengthen ties, promote shared development, and expand partnerships.
From November 13 to 23, Xi attended the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the 19th G20 Summit, while also paying state visits to Peru and Brazil.
During the 11-day tour, Xi participated in nearly 40 bilateral and multilateral events, resulting in over 60 cooperation agreements. Wang highlighted Xi’s emphasis on multilateralism, the significance of Latin America in global governance, and China’s commitment to fairness, openness, and inclusivity.
At the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Xi urged Asia-Pacific economies to embrace true multilateralism, foster interconnected cooperation, drive green innovation, and pursue inclusive development. His written address to the CEO summit reinforced these goals.
At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Xi outlined China’s vision for global governance, emphasizing inclusivity, shared benefits, and resilience. He called for a cooperative and eco-friendly global economy and announced eight actions to advance global development, including joining the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.
Xi’s initiatives reflected the Global South’s aspirations for equality and reform while setting a constructive course for improving global governance, according to Wang.
A major highlight in Peru was Xi’s participation, alongside President Dina Boluarte, in the virtual opening of Chancay Port, South America’s first smart and green port. This project is expected to boost Peru’s economy and create a new Asia-Latin America trade corridor.
In Brazil, Xi held extensive discussions with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, leading to an elevation of China-Brazil relations. Both nations agreed to align Brazil’s development strategies with the Belt and Road Initiative, marking a historic milestone in their bilateral ties.
Xi also held over 10 bilateral meetings during the trip. In discussions with U.S. President Joe Biden, both leaders underlined the importance of stable China-U.S. relations, which are vital to global peace and prosperity. Xi reiterated China’s stance on key issues like Taiwan, advocating for constructive engagement between the two nations.
Xi engaged with European leaders, including those from France, Germany, and Britain, advocating for long-term strategic partnerships. He called for resolving differences through dialogue and fostering mutual success through cooperation.
Throughout the visit, Xi detailed China’s strategies for high-quality development and openness, inviting other nations to collaborate for shared modernization and peaceful progress. His speeches and agreements reinforced China’s role as a global partner in achieving common prosperity.
