President Xi urges China-Italy cooperation for building better world noting that both states should work towards promoting openness.
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Beijing on Friday, emphasizing the need for China and Italy to collaborate in building a harmonious global community. Mattarella’s state visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership. Xi noted that both countries, as ancient civilizations, should maintain traditions of openness and promote international conflict resolution through dialogue and cooperation.
Xi highlighted that mutual respect, trust, and win-win cooperation are central to China-Italy relations. He urged both nations to maximize the role of the China-Italy Government Committee and other dialogue mechanisms, enhance exchanges, build trust, and support each other on key issues, reinforcing their partnership.
Cultural collaboration between China and Italy has been fruitful, and Xi called for further strengthening of people-to-people exchanges. He emphasized implementing new cultural cooperation initiatives, expanding collaboration in arts, cultural heritage protection, translation of classical works, tourism, and education. Xi encouraged more cooperation on cultural heritage sites and youth exchanges, and expressed China’s willingness to import quality Italian goods, promote mutual investments, and deepen partnerships in science, technology, environmental protection, clean energy, and aerospace.
Xi also underscored the importance of China-Europe relations, advocating for strategic communication, open cooperation, and mutual learning. He expressed China’s readiness to cooperate with Europe on global challenges, with hopes that Italy will play a constructive role in fostering this collaboration.
President Mattarella Remarks
President Mattarella recognized the historical bond between China and Italy, noting the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death as a symbol of their enduring friendship. He called for enhancing cultural and educational exchanges, language teaching, and cultural heritage cooperation to further East-West dialogue and human progress.
Mattarella affirmed Italy’s commitment to the one-China policy and its view of China as a vital partner. He expressed Italy’s desire to leverage the 20th anniversary of their partnership to deepen economic, trade, and scientific cooperation, elevating bilateral relations. Both countries share common stances on major issues, opposing protectionism, supporting mutual openness, and advocating for constructive communication and collaboration to meet global challenges.
After their talks, the leaders witnessed the signing of multiple agreements covering culture, science and technology, education, and the protection of world heritage sites.
