Xi, Putin Reaffirm Strategic Ties and Call for Peace Talks on Ukraine Crisis.
China Maintains Consistent Stance on Ukraine
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday reiterated that Beijing will remain steadfast in its position on the Ukraine crisis and continue to advocate for peace talks regardless of how the situation unfolds.
In a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Xi stressed that complex conflicts require comprehensive solutions, outlining China’s principles and approach to facilitating dialogue.
Russia Appreciates China’s Constructive Role
Putin shared Moscow’s perspective on the ongoing crisis, as well as recent developments in Russia–US relations. He praised China’s constructive role in pursuing a political resolution and affirmed that the Russia–China comprehensive strategic partnership will remain unchanged under any circumstances.
Both leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining close communication to coordinate on regional and global challenges.
US-Russia Dialogue and Potential Summits
The call came amid growing speculation over a potential summit between Putin and US President Donald Trump, which media reports suggest could take place in the coming days in an Arab country. While the Russia–Ukraine conflict is unlikely to be resolved in a single meeting, experts believe such dialogue could help pave the way for de-escalation and further engagement.
Coordination Ahead of the SCO Summit
Xi and Putin also discussed preparations for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. They pledged to work together to ensure the event promotes unity, friendship, and practical cooperation among member states, to strengthen the SCO’s capacity to address future uncertainties.
