Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his willingness to collaborate with Russian President Vladimir Putin to elevate China-Russia relations to new heights in the upcoming year. Xi made these remarks during a video meeting, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral ties amidst global uncertainties.
Xi highlighted the need to use the stability and resilience of China-Russia relations to counter external challenges, jointly pursue national development and revitalization, and uphold international fairness and justice. Both leaders exchanged warm greetings for the approaching Chinese Lunar New Year.
Reflecting on the past year, Xi mentioned his three meetings with Putin, which resulted in significant mutual agreements. He noted that 2024 marked the 75th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic ties, characterized by a robust and enduring friendship, strategic cooperation, and mutually beneficial collaboration.
Xi also referenced cultural exchange initiatives under the China-Russia Years of Culture and acknowledged the steady progress in bilateral trade and practical cooperation. He praised the two nations’ collaboration on multilateral platforms such as the UN, SCO, and BRICS, which have contributed to global governance reform.
Xi urged both nations to deepen their strategic coordination, reinforce mutual support, and protect their legitimate interests. He emphasized expanding bilateral ties and advancing pragmatic cooperation for mutual benefit.
Xi noted that 2025 marks the 80th anniversaries of key historical milestones, including victories in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War, and the founding of the UN. He called for joint efforts to uphold the UN-centered international system, preserve World War II outcomes, and practice genuine multilateralism.
As the current chair of the SCO, Xi expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Russia and other member states to foster high-quality development within the organization. He also emphasized enhancing BRICS cooperation and promoting unity and progress for the Global South.
Putin highlighted the mutual trust, support, and equality between Russia and China, affirming that their cooperation serves the interests of their people and remains unaffected by international changes. He expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in bilateral trade, energy collaboration, and cultural exchanges.
Putin reaffirmed Russia’s stance on Taiwan, emphasizing that it is an inseparable part of China and opposing any form of “Taiwan independence.” He also commemorated the joint sacrifices made by the Russian and Chinese people 80 years ago to safeguard sovereignty and dignity.
Putin voiced Russia’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation with China and contributing to global peace and development. The two leaders also discussed international and regional issues of shared concern, agreeing to maintain close strategic communication in the coming year.
