Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized China’s willingness to collaborate with Bangladesh in advancing practical cooperation and enhancing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation during his meeting with Touhid Hossain, Adviser for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in Beijing on Tuesday.

Hossain’s ongoing five-day visit to China, which began on Monday, marks his first international trip since assuming office, underscoring the significance Bangladesh’s interim government places on its relationship with China.

Wang noted that China has consistently prioritized its ties with Bangladesh within its neighborhood diplomacy and adheres to a policy of good-neighborliness toward the Bangladeshi people.

As China continues to deepen its reforms and advance modernization, Wang stated that these developments will create fresh opportunities for countries around the world, particularly for China’s neighboring nations.

Bangladesh holds the distinction of being the first South Asian nation to sign a memorandum of understanding with China on Belt and Road cooperation.

Wang called for joint efforts to implement major flagship projects and smaller, impactful livelihood programs, urging the two nations to consolidate traditional areas of collaboration while exploring emerging fields of cooperation.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh, as well as the China-Bangladesh Year of Cultural Exchange. Wang reiterated China’s commitment to fostering traditional friendship, strengthening strategic communication, and advancing their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Hossain highlighted that friendship with China has widespread support across Bangladeshi political parties, successive governments, and its population.

He expressed gratitude to China for its unwavering support in safeguarding Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, reaffirming Bangladesh’s adherence to the one-China principle.

Hossain also thanked China for its consistent and selfless contributions to Bangladesh’s development, which have delivered tangible benefits to its people. He stated that Bangladesh is eager to enhance mutual support with China in international forums, strengthen coordination in regional affairs, and work as partners to promote connectivity, regional economic integration, and international fairness and justice.
