President Xi meets Macao’s incoming chief executive Sam Hou Fai in Beijing and Premier Li Qiang presented him the decree from the State Council.
President Xi Jinping met with Sam Hou Fai on Friday, who has recently been elected as the chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and appointed by the central government of China.
The meeting was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where Premier Li Qiang, in Xi’s presence, formally presented Sam with the decree from the State Council designating him as the sixth chief executive of the Macao SAR.
Xi congratulated Sam on his new role and praised his unwavering commitment to both the country and Macao, as well as his dedicated service that has contributed to the region’s stability and prosperity during his lengthy tenure as president of Macao’s Court of Final Appeal.
He noted that Sam’s election, achieved with overwhelming support, reflects strong recognition and backing from the Macao community, which the central authorities acknowledge and trust fully.
One country, Two systems
Xi highlighted the remarkable success of the “one country, two systems” principle tailored to Macao over the past 25 years since its return to China, reaffirming the central government’s commitment to fully and faithfully implementing this principle, allowing the people of Macao to govern themselves with a high degree of autonomy.
The president further reminded Sam that the role of chief executive carries substantial responsibilities and encouraged him to lead the new SAR government in uniting various sectors of Macao society, continuously innovating in the practice of “one country, two systems” unique to Macao.
In response, Sam expressed his deep honor at being appointed and committed to faithfully executing the “one country, two systems” principle under President Xi’s leadership and the guidance of the central government, aiming for comprehensive progress in Macao.
Moreover, senior officials including Li Qiang, Cai Qi, and Ding Xuexiang were present during the meeting.
