Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for increased efforts to preserve and enhance the country’s cultural and natural treasures in the modern era.
Xi, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, issued these instructions to bolster the protection, preservation, and use of cultural and natural heritage.
This call for action follows the recent inclusion of one cultural heritage and two natural sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2024. UNESCO added the Beijing Central Axis, the Badain Jaran Desert, and the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of the Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase II) during its 46th World Heritage Committee session in New Delhi, India.
Xi noted that the inclusion of these sites is significant for advancing Chinese modernization, emphasizing both material and cultural progress and the harmony between humanity and nature. He highlighted that these additions enhance the global appreciation of civilizations.
Xi stressed that this UNESCO recognition be used as an opportunity to further improve the comprehensive protection and utilization of cultural and natural heritage to better serve people’s needs. He also emphasized the importance of international cooperation and contributions to the Global Civilization Initiative and the building of a shared future for humanity.
China now boasts a total of 59 World Heritage sites.
