Xi holds talks with Chilean President Boric emphasizing cooperation in various sectors. On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric, who is in Beijing to attend the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum.
Xi highlighted that this year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Chile. He emphasized the importance of enriching their comprehensive strategic partnership, creating a model for development between China and Latin America, and setting a prime example of South-South cooperation. Both nations aim to contribute to global peace and progress.
Xi expressed China’s willingness to strengthen political trust with Chile, enhance governance exchanges, and firmly support each other on core issues, ensuring the protection of each country’s sovereignty, security, and developmental interests.
Xi called for the two countries to focus on implementing Belt and Road cooperation, deepening collaboration in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, infrastructure, and green minerals. He also proposed new areas of growth in fields such as astronomy, polar research, AI, biomedicine, and the digital economy.
China supports the expansion of Chinese investments and business operations in Chile and encourages more high-quality Chilean products to enter the Chinese market.
Xi suggested enhancing mutual cultural exchanges, particularly in education, culture, media, and youth programs, while facilitating personnel exchanges between the two nations.
Both China and Chile are strong proponents of multilateralism and free trade, and Xi emphasized the need for enhanced multilateral cooperation to protect the interests of the Global South.
Boric, acknowledging China as Chile’s largest trading partner, said bilateral cooperation has been mutually beneficial. He reiterated Chile’s commitment to the one-China policy and expressed readiness to expand cooperation in trade, investment, and AI. Both countries aim to advance high-quality Belt and Road initiatives and strengthen cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Boric stressed the importance of free trade based on mutual benefit, warning against the consequences of trade wars. He emphasized the necessity of resolving trade disputes through dialogue and promoting fair trade.
Chile is committed to defending multilateralism and the UN’s authority, Boric added, highlighting the importance of resolving differences through dialogue and upholding international fairness and justice.
During his visit to China, both sides signed multiple cooperation agreements in sectors including economy, publishing, inspection and quarantine, media, and think tanks.
