Xi hails Olympians for winning glory for country highlighting that China’s openness and inclusiveness was showcased at the games.
President Xi Jinping praised Chinese Olympians for their impressive performance and sportsmanship at the 33rd Summer Olympic Games in Paris. He highlighted that the athletes showcased China’s openness, inclusiveness, and progress, along with the ambition, courage, and confidence of the Chinese people.
During a meeting with China’s Olympic delegation at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi, who also serves as the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, expressed pride in the athletes’ achievements, stating that the motherland and its people are proud of them.
China secured 91 medals at the Paris Olympics, including 40 golds, tying with the United States for the most gold medals. This achievement marked China’s best performance at an overseas Olympics.
President Xi Jinping, along with other Chinese leaders, met with the Olympic delegation at 3:20 pm on Tuesday, engaging with the athletes and taking a group photo. Xi praised the delegation’s unity, resilience, and exceptional performance, extending warm congratulations and best wishes to everyone involved in the sports sector nationwide.
Xi emphasized that the Chinese sports delegation’s outstanding performance would enhance Chinese sportsmanship and the Olympic spirit. He commended them for their ethical conduct and positive image, noting that they have won gold in competition, ethics, and behavior.
The president further stressed that the delegation’s success reflects the progress in China’s sports development and the broader achievements of Chinese modernization. He attributed this success to the nation’s growing strength and the advanced technology supporting sports training.
Xi underlined that China’s emergence as a major sports power and strong Olympic nation is rooted in its increasing national strength. He expressed confidence that China’s ongoing modernization will further propel the development of its sports industry.
President Xi also encouraged the delegation to maintain high ethical standards and sportsmanship in future Olympic cycles. He called for continuous improvement, talent cultivation, and thorough preparation for upcoming competitions, aiming to strengthen China’s overall competitive edge and promote national fitness and youth sports.
China has become a dominant force in global sports over recent decades, achieving significant breakthroughs at the Paris Olympics in events like tennis, boxing, and swimming. Notably, Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen made history by winning the country’s first singles gold medal in tennis, and the Chinese rhythmic gymnastics team became the first non-European country to win the group event at the Olympics.
