BEIJING – Xi Jinping chairs meeting on flood control and disaster relief calling for increased vigilance and protective measures.
Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, led a Standing Committee meeting on Thursday to plan flood control and disaster relief efforts.
China is facing a crucial flood control period, with significant flooding expected in major river basins such as the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, further complicated by potential typhoons.
The peak flood season in China, from late July to early August, is marked by heavy rainfall and typhoons, raising water levels and threatening communities near rivers, lakes, and coastlines.
Forecasts predict flooding in all seven major river basins and increased typhoon activity in inland regions, with a higher frequency of extreme weather events.
A red alert, the highest level, was issued for Typhoon Gaemi by China’s National Meteorological Center, marking the first such alert this year.
The meeting called for heightened vigilance and proactive measures in flood control, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing people’s safety and relocating those in danger.
It stressed the need to strengthen water infrastructure to prevent breaches and bursts, and to allocate disaster relief funds promptly to support affected residents.
Xi chairs meeting on flood control which also highlighted the importance of disaster control in agriculture to minimize losses and ensure food security.
