Xi and Macron introduce Tang Dynasty Exhibition in France with Xi describing Tang Dynasty’s prosperous periods.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron have written forewords for an exhibition titled “Tang China — A Cosmopolitan Dynasty (7th-10th Century),” which opened Monday at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts in France.
Highlighting the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and France, Xi noted that during his visit to France in May, the two nations agreed to hold an exhibition showcasing artifacts from the Tang Dynasty at the Guimet Museum. Xi expressed his pleasure at seeing the exhibition proceed as planned, thanks to the collaborative efforts of cultural relics experts from both countries.
Xi described the Tang Dynasty as one of China’s most prosperous periods, known for its robust economy, rich culture, inclusivity in intellectual pursuits, significant artistic achievements, and ethnic integration. The dynasty’s influence extended throughout Asia and reached Europe via the Silk Road, with lasting contributions in poetry, painting, and exquisite gold and silverware still celebrated today.
Xi expressed hope that the exhibition would provide French and other European audiences with a vivid portrayal of the Tang Dynasty’s brilliance, openness, and cultural vibrance, offering a deeper appreciation for Chinese civilization. He emphasized the long-standing history and cultural richness of both Chinese and French peoples, who have enjoyed centuries of mutual admiration and friendly exchanges.
Xi encouraged using cultural heritage as a source of inspiration to strengthen people-to-people exchanges and promote mutual learning, while fostering greater cooperation in preserving cultural treasures. He also called for an appreciation of each culture’s beauty, emphasizing the value of sharing differences and integrating historical legacy with contemporary spirit to solidify the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership.
Remarks from Macron
Macron, in his remarks, noted that to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations and celebrate the Year of Culture and Tourism, the Guimet Museum would host a major exhibition of Tang Dynasty artifacts.
Moreover, Macron highlighted the Tang Dynasty’s significance in Chinese history, renowned for its vibrant culture and creative vitality, as well as its extensive foreign exchanges via the Silk Road, which produced an array of artistic masterpieces.
Macron concluded by emphasizing that this important exhibition underscores the dynamic cultural exchanges between France and China, which continue to strengthen bilateral relations.
Organized by China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration and the French Ministry of Culture, the exhibition features over 200 pieces or sets of artifacts from 32 cultural institutions across 10 Chinese regions and cities.
