Water project for Gwadar from Tajikistan feasibility study finalized that aims to address Gwadar’s water shortage.
President Asif Ali Zardari announced on Tuesday the completion of a feasibility study for a water supply project that aims to provide water to Gwadar from Tajikistan. This initiative is expected to help mitigate the city’s ongoing water shortage and support its expanding population and developmental requirements.
Speaking at the closing session of the International Conference on ‘Regional Connectivity & Pakistan: Emerging Opportunities,’ organized by the Pakistan-China Institute at Aiwan-e-Sadr, President Zardari highlighted the complexity of the proposed water supply route. He noted that the feasibility study has been submitted to the Chinese government, with assistance from the UAE.
President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to enhancing regional connectivity and economic collaboration. He emphasized that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Gwadar Port are pivotal in driving regional trade and economic growth. He also underscored Pakistan’s strategic position as a crucial trade corridor linking China, Central Asia, and the Middle East, offering immense opportunities for regional commerce.
Ahmed Jarwan Al Mohammed, President of the UAE-based Global Council of Tolerance and Peace, commended Pakistan’s efforts in fostering regional connectivity. He stressed the importance of cooperation in promoting tolerance, education, and business ties to strengthen international relations.
Gwadar has faced persistent water shortages for several years due to its growing population and development demands, which have exerted pressure on its water supply. To combat this challenge, Pakistan and China have undertaken multiple projects, including the establishment of a desalination plant in Gwadar. Additionally, in June 2023, both nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on water conservation, watershed planning, flood control, drought relief, and environmental protection
