Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Wednesday that the political manipulation of human rights issues by countries like the U.S. is increasingly losing global support. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Wang emphasized that over 100 countries have backed China’s position against politicizing human rights, as evidenced by the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.
During the session, nearly 80 countries, including many Muslim nations, issued a joint statement in support of China, while over 20 others voiced support in different ways, particularly in response to U.S.-led accusations concerning Xinjiang. Wang noted that Muslim nations see through the U.S.’s use of human rights as a pretext to interfere in the internal matters of China and other developing countries.
Wang highlighted that the widespread backing from developing nations not only defends China’s rights but also upholds international justice, safeguards the interests of developing nations, and reinforces the principle of non-interference in global affairs. He criticized the U.S. for its double standards on human rights, pointing out its role in provoking wars in Muslim-majority regions like the Middle East, which has led to significant loss of life.
Additionally, Wang questioned why the U.S. fails to address historical injustices faced by Arabs or support Palestine’s bid for full UN membership. He stressed that China’s progress in human rights, especially in Xinjiang, is evident, and reaffirmed that China is open to dialogue on human rights with all countries based on equality. He invited international friends to visit China and see its development firsthand.
