Wang Yi holds phone calls with FMs of Israel and Iran and calls for an immediate, lasting and permanent ceasefire.
Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi had phone calls with the foreign ministers of both Iran and Israel on Monday, expressing China’s deep concern over the tensions between the two nations. Wang emphasized that escalating conflict in the region benefits no one and urged for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza, along with the release of all hostages. He stressed the importance of ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Gaza without hindrance.
Call with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz
During his call with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Wang noted the international community’s worry about the ongoing conflict. He highlighted that all lives, regardless of nationality or ethnicity, hold equal value and that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza must come to an end. Wang argued that resorting to violence only perpetuates the cycle and fails to address the legitimate concerns of all parties. He also reiterated that the Palestinian issue remains central to peace in the Middle East and called for a return to the “two-state solution” to achieve peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.
Wang stated that China is particularly concerned about the tensions between Israel and Iran, warning that renewed conflict would serve no one’s interests. He urged all parties to exercise caution to avoid worsening the situation. Wang emphasized that China has no geopolitical agenda in the Middle East and seeks to promote peace. As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China has consistently supported international law and aims to play a constructive role in restoring regional peace.
Wang also discussed the importance of ensuring the safety of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) personnel and urged Israel to take concrete steps for their protection. Additionally, the two diplomats exchanged views on China-Israel relations, with Katz affirming Israel’s commitment to developing ties with China and respecting China’s position on the Taiwan issue. Wang expressed China’s willingness to resume full exchanges with Israel when conditions improve.
Call with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi
Wang also held a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, during which both sides praised the strength of China-Iran relations. Araghchi conveyed Iran’s concerns over the potential for the current regional conflict to escalate and emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions. He called for cautious actions from Israel to avoid further instability.
Wang highlighted the spillover effects of the Gaza conflict and the escalating regional tensions. He reiterated China’s stance on resolving disputes through dialogue, opposing military adventures and escalating tensions. Wang also praised Iran’s efforts in mediation diplomacy and the country’s efforts to improve relations with regional neighbors. He expressed China’s support for the reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia and its commitment to fostering positive outcomes in regional diplomacy. Wang further noted that China looks forward to the continued progress of the China-Iran-Saudi Arabia Trilateral Joint Committee to bolster regional peace.
