Wang Yi: China to promote ties with Maldives to new level and upgrade partnership to strategic, cooperative relations.
Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New York on Monday, where Wang emphasized China’s commitment to elevating bilateral relations.
Wang, a member of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, highlighted the strong neighborly ties between China and the Maldives across the Indian Ocean. He recalled Muizzu’s successful state visit to China in January, during which both leaders upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, aiming to build a shared future.
Wang noted that under the guidance of the two heads of state, China and the Maldives have maintained close exchanges and practical cooperation, benefiting the Maldivian people. Despite regional and global uncertainties, bilateral relations have remained stable and healthy.
China expressed its readiness to work closely with the Maldives to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders and to further enhance their partnership. Wang stated that China’s development will contribute to global peace and bring new opportunities to developing nations like the Maldives.
He emphasized that China-Maldives relations exemplify how large and small countries can cooperate for mutual benefit, equality, and support. China aims to strengthen its traditional friendship with the Maldives and work together to build a community with a shared future for all mankind.
Wang reiterated China’s support for the Maldives in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and encouraged the Maldives to pursue a development path that aligns with its national needs. He also mentioned China’s willingness to assist small island nations through the Global Development Initiative, particularly in tackling challenges like climate change.
