Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi participated in the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Friday.
Wang, also a member of the Communist Party of China’s Political Bureau, emphasized that the Asia-Pacific’s development has been made possible by its long-standing peace and stability, which must be safeguarded.
Recognizing ARF as a key multilateral security platform in the region, Wang supported proposals to strengthen its role and expand confidence-building efforts to sustain peace and cooperation.
He outlined China’s approach for ensuring long-term stability in the region, which includes a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security; a balanced and effective security framework; and a uniquely Asian security model that values dialogue over confrontation, partnerships over alliances, and mutual benefit over zero-sum competition.
Wang warned against zero-sum thinking that fosters division, stating it undermines regional security. He called for addressing both the symptoms and root causes of conflict and war.
Emphasizing Asia’s cultural tradition of harmony and coexistence, Wang referenced the Bandung Spirit and urged respect for all parties’ legitimate security concerns.
He concluded by affirming China’s readiness to work with regional partners to resolve differences through dialogue, while enhancing confidence-building and preventive diplomacy across all ARF areas.
