Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate meetings on Wednesday with African foreign ministers visiting China for the FOCAC Ministerial Coordinators’ Meeting in Changsha, Hunan Province.
The visiting foreign ministers included officials from the Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Djibouti, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia.
In his meeting with Jean-Claude Gakosso of the Republic of the Congo, Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening mutual political trust and enhancing economic cooperation. Gakosso praised the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for offering Africa a path toward sustainable development and reiterated his country’s support for the one-China policy.
During talks with Ronald Lamola of South Africa, Wang expressed readiness to deepen political trust and support South Africa’s G20 leadership. Lamola acknowledged FOCAC’s achievements and looked forward to expanded cooperation in sectors such as trade, energy, training, and public health.
With Djibouti’s Abdoulkader Houssein Omar, Wang emphasized China’s continued backing for African unity and homegrown solutions. Omar valued Djibouti’s strategic partnership with China and expressed commitment to multilateralism and joint problem-solving.
Wang highlighted Ghana’s new strategic partnership with China in talks with Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stressing future collaboration across various sectors. Ablakwa welcomed closer ties, noting China as Ghana’s top trading partner and reiterating support for the one-China principle.
In his exchange with Therese Kayikwamba Wagner of the DRC, Wang proposed deeper cooperation to help transform the country’s resource wealth into development. Wagner confirmed the DRC’s firm support for China’s initiatives and commitment to the one-China stance.
Meeting Bakary Yaou Sangare of Niger, Wang described their bilateral relationship as part of South-South cooperation and urged protection of Chinese nationals in Niger. Sangare affirmed Niger’s prioritization of ties with China and its commitment to mutual trust and security.
Carlos Pinto Pereira of Guinea-Bissau was commended by Wang for resisting U.S. tariff actions, with Wang calling for Global South unity against unilateralism. Pereira thanked China for its ongoing support and pledged to expand bilateral cooperation.
With Nigeria’s Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Wang emphasized the growing global role of China-Nigeria ties and shared development goals. Tuggar praised the relationship and expressed interest in deepening cooperation in multiple fields.
In talks with Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore of Burkina Faso, Wang noted that restored diplomatic relations served the country’s long-term interests and encouraged Chinese investment. Traore appreciated China’s development support and aimed to strengthen bilateral ties.
Finally, with Ethiopia’s Gedion Timothewos, Wang noted early successes in implementing FOCAC outcomes and stressed shared development goals. Timothewos thanked China for its unwavering support and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to the one-China policy.
