Toyota unveils New bZ5 EV in China, reflecting Toyota’s commitment to China’s growing electric vehicle market.
The brand new Toyota bZ5, an intelligent electric vehicle, officially entered the Chinese market on Friday as it rolled off the assembly line at FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd.’s plant in Tianjin, a northern port city in China.
This launch also marks a major production achievement, as the bZ5 is the 12 millionth vehicle manufactured by FAW Toyota, a joint venture between Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation and China’s First Automotive Works (FAW) Group.
The bZ5 comes with advanced features such as a panoramic sunroof and a 15.6-inch high-definition touchscreen. It integrates the latest Toyota Pilot intelligent driving assistance system, offering over 30 functions including urban and highway navigation support and automated parking.
Toyota President and CEO Koji Sato emphasized China’s global leadership in electric and smart vehicle technologies. He noted that if Toyota can appeal to Chinese consumers, its products are likely to perform well in international markets too.
By April 2025, Toyota’s Tianjin plant had produced 258,000 new energy vehicles, generating a total output value of 54 billion yuan (approximately 7.5 billion USD). In the first four months of 2025 alone, 35,900 vehicles were produced, representing a 34% year-on-year growth.
The launch of the bZ5 highlights China’s increasing importance in Toyota’s global operations, not only as a production base but also as a center for innovation and vehicle sales.
In late April, Toyota signed an agreement with Shanghai’s municipal government to build a fully-owned electric vehicle plant in the city.
As per the strategic agreement, Toyota plans to invest 14.6 billion yuan in a new energy vehicle facility in Jinshan District, focusing on the R&D, manufacturing, and sale of Lexus electric vehicles and EV batteries.
