Spanish PM praised Pakistan’s swift response to Indian airstrikes as he addressed a session in Congress.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez commended Pakistan for its diplomatic handling of a recent military strike carried out by India, amidst growing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
During a session in Congress where he advocated for increasing defense spending to 2% of GDP by 2025, Sánchez used the South Asian crisis as an example to underscore the critical role of diplomacy and multilateral cooperation in the current volatile global landscape.
“Security is not just about military strength; it’s also about restoring diplomacy and multilateralism as foundational elements of a stable international order, which is increasingly under threat,” he remarked.
Sánchez praised Pakistan’s diplomatic response to the conflict, highlighting its commitment to peaceful resolution and the importance of multilateral efforts.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, especially considering the nuclear capabilities of both nations, Sánchez referred to the midnight raids and emphasized that both countries bear significant responsibility in the matter. He commended Pakistan’s decision to respond with restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions, demonstrating its dedication to peace and international norms.
The conflict stemmed from a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir two weeks ago that killed several civilians. In retaliation, India launched airstrikes on what it claimed were terrorist camps within Pakistani territory and the disputed Kashmir region. Pakistan, condemning the strikes, has so far chosen a restrained approach, calling for international mediation and dialogue.
Sánchez’s remarks reflect his concern about the destabilizing potential of regional conflicts and reinforce his broader call for increased investment in both defense and diplomacy as crucial tools for safeguarding global security.
