Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State in Astana on Monday. The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and stressed their shared commitment to stronger cooperation. This session marked another step in consolidating ties, as Shehbaz and Pezeshkian reviewed Pak-Iran ties at the SCO Summit and highlighted their growing momentum.
Strengthening Historic Relations
Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its “historic and brotherly ties” with Iran. He underlined that the relationship rests on shared history, culture, and faith, while emphasising the importance of enhancing political, economic, and security cooperation. Referring to President Pezeshkian’s recent visit to Pakistan, Shehbaz noted that the trip had greatly boosted confidence between the two nations and brought people closer.
Iranian Support for Pakistan
In response, President Pezeshkian praised Pakistan’s consistent support for Iran and reiterated Tehran’s determination to deepen collaboration across energy, trade, and connectivity. He also expressed solidarity with Pakistan over the ongoing floods, assuring that Iran “stood shoulder to shoulder” with its neighbour during this difficult time. This gesture, according to both leaders, reaffirmed the spirit of brotherhood guiding Pak-Iran relations.
Dialogue and Regional Peace
Shehbaz also stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path to peace and stability in the region. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the government and people of Iran, noting that cooperation within forums like the SCO could help address regional challenges collectively.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and senior cabinet members, reflecting the high-level commitment on both sides.
