Shanghai Auto Show 2025 showcases Green Tech and smart mobility solutions.

The 2025 Shanghai Auto Show began on Wednesday, highlighting numerous technological advancements with a strong emphasis on environmentally friendly and smart mobility solutions.

Spanning ten days, the event is being held in Shanghai and has attracted close to 1,000 prominent automakers and supply chain enterprises from 26 countries and regions, making it the largest iteration of the show to date.

Over 100 new vehicle models are expected to make their first public appearance during the exhibition.

According to Gu Chunting, vice chairman of CCPIT Shanghai, around 1,300 vehicles are being showcased this year, with more than 70% of them being new energy vehicles. In addition, dealers from over 100 countries and regions have come to participate in the show.

A standout feature of this year’s event is the debut of the Automotive Technology and Supply Chain Pavilion, presenting state-of-the-art developments and technologies spanning the entire automotive value chain.

This pavilion has seen a notable increase in participants compared to previous years, with nearly 50 well-known domestic and international companies in technology, chips, and semiconductors joining the event for the first time.

In the lead-up to the show, several leading automakers and supply chain companies, both Chinese and global, made major announcements, building excitement for the event.

One such announcement came from Toyota, which signed a deal on Tuesday to set up a wholly owned electric vehicle plant in Shanghai, aiming to strengthen its footprint in the Chinese market.

Under its agreement with the Shanghai government, Toyota plans to invest 14.6 billion yuan (around $2 billion) in the development, manufacturing, and sale of Lexus electric vehicles and batteries.

Tatsuro Ueda, Toyota’s top executive in China, expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with local suppliers to highlight the strengths of China’s new energy vehicle supply chain and expand the global influence of Chinese technology.

Volkswagen, with a 40-year history in China, is presenting over 50 models at the show and plans to roll out more than 30 new models tailored to the Chinese market over the next three years.

Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars China, emphasized the company’s deep integration in the Chinese market and its ability to scale innovations from China to its global operations.

Meanwhile, battery maker CATL introduced a new dual-core battery design that divides a single battery into two zones with different cell materials, enhancing overall performance by leveraging the unique strengths of each.

Running through May 2, the Shanghai Auto Show also includes exhibits on intelligent vehicle connectivity, safety systems, and automotive financial services.
