A Saudi government official has announced that the high-speed Haramain train service transported over 41,000 passengers last Friday, marking the highest number in a single day.
Saleh Al Jasser, the Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, revealed that a total of 120 journeys are scheduled for the upcoming Friday, which is the last in the current month of Ramadan. It is anticipated that this day will set a new record for the number of passengers using the train.
Launched in 2018, the Haramain train connects the cities of Mecca and Madina, housing Islam’s two holiest sites, with the port city of Jeddah. Spanning 450 kilometers, the service aims to facilitate the transportation of around 60 million passengers annually.
To accommodate the increasing demand for travel between Mecca and Madina during Ramadan, which is expected to conclude on April 9, the service plans to operate over 2,700 journeys, providing 1.3 million seats.
