President Xi Jinping met with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres at the Tianjin Guest House on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit 2025.
Xi underlined that the creation of the United Nations 80 years ago, following the end of the Second World War, remains a milestone in safeguarding peace and multilateral cooperation. He emphasised that the world must rededicate itself to the UN’s founding principles, strengthen its authority, and allow it to remain the leading platform for addressing global challenges.
Highlighting China’s role as a permanent member of the Security Council, Xi reaffirmed that Beijing would continue practising “true multilateralism” and serve as a reliable partner of the UN. He pledged China’s commitment to peace, stability, and inclusive development through initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilisation Initiative, and Belt and Road cooperation.
Guterres thanked China for its consistent support of the UN and praised Beijing’s contributions to upholding international law and multilateralism. He noted that in an era where multilateral institutions face growing challenges, China’s role as a stabilising force is vital. The Secretary General added that both sides should enhance collaboration in global governance reform, artificial intelligence, and climate action to better serve humanity.
Senior Chinese officials Cai Qi, Wang Yi, and Chen Min’er also attended the meeting.
