On the afternoon of November 14, 2024 local time, President Xi Jinping held talks with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte at the Presidential Palace in Lima.
President Xi said it was a great pleasure to pay a state visit to Peru and attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting at the invitation of President Boluarte. This is his third visit to Peru and third meeting with President Boluarte in a period of one year, after their first meeting in San Francisco last year and her visit to China this year. Since the moment of landing in this beautiful country, the Peruvian people’s friendship toward the Chinese people has been palpable and heartwarming.
China and Peru are both ancient civilizations. They inherit from their rich cultural heritages the wisdom and an open mind to appreciate the trajectory of history, move with the trend of the times, and value equality, respect, trust and mutual learning, setting a strong example of solidarity and cooperation between countries of different sizes, systems and cultures.
Over the past 53 years of diplomatic ties, China and Peru have enjoyed sound development in their relations. In particular, since President Xi’s first state visit to Peru in 2016, the two sides have increased bilateral trade by 1.6 times, doubled the stock of Chinese business investment in Peru, and completed the upgrading of their free trade agreement. All these have brought tangible benefits to the people of the two countries. It is good news that a Chinese carrier has recently established air connections with Peru through code sharing, taking an effective step to boost mutual visits. The two sides need to review past successes in their cooperation, continue to make good overarching plans, strengthen the two drivers of trade and investment, develop the two wings of traditional and emerging industries, and better connect the two sets of industrial and supply chains, so as to upgrade China-Peru and China-Latin America practical cooperation. China values its traditional friendship with Peru, and appreciates the decision of Peru’s Congress to designate every February 1 as the Peru-China Fraternity Day. China is ready to work with Peru to bring their comprehensive strategic partnership to still new heights and better benefit the two peoples.
This visit includes a joint video attendance with President Boluarte at the inauguration ceremony of the Chancay Port. The project is another success in bilateral cooperation under Belt and Road initiative. Starting from the port, China will work with Peru to develop a new China-Latin America land-sea corridor and link the Inca Trail with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, opening a route to shared prosperity and happiness for Peru and other countries in the broader Latin American and Caribbean regions.
Peru will host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting on the next day for the third time after eight years. China fully supports Peru in hosting the event to a full success and making yet another “Lima mark” on Asia-Pacific cooperation.
