President Xi Jinping urged on Thursday for the unification of the strong forces within the Global South to advance the establishment of a community with a shared future for humanity.

He emphasized China’s dedication to fostering common development with Global South nations and supporting their integration into BRICS, asserting that China’s modernization initiatives will offer developmental prospects for the global community.

Xi made these statements during the BRICS Plus leaders’ dialogue in Kazan, Russia, which was led by President Vladimir Putin, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the BRICS group.

He remarked that the unified ascent of the Global South is a notable aspect of the significant global transformation, and the collaborative progress of these countries toward modernization represents a historic milestone in world history, unmatched in human civilization.

While acknowledging the significant challenges faced by Global South nations on their path to modernization, Xi stressed the importance of collective efforts to maintain peace for shared security, revitalize development for collective prosperity, and promote the harmony of diverse civilizations.

He advocated for bolstering global security governance to seek comprehensive solutions to ongoing crises.

Addressing the Ukraine conflict, Xi stated, “We should promote early de-escalation to pave the way for a political resolution.”

He also called for ongoing efforts to establish a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and revive the two-state solution, asserting, “We must prevent the spread of war in Lebanon and alleviate the suffering in Palestine and Lebanon.”

Global South and Global Economic Governance

Xi highlighted the necessity for Global South countries to take an active and leading role in reforming global economic governance to prioritize development within the international economic and trade agenda.

Since its establishment three years ago, the China-led Global Development Initiative has mobilized nearly $20 billion in development funds and initiated over 1,100 projects, according to Xi. He also mentioned the recent establishment of the Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Shanghai.

“China will also develop a World Smart Customs Community Portal and a BRICS Customs Center of Excellence. We welcome the active involvement of all nations,” he stated.

To enhance communication and dialogue, Xi announced that “China will collaborate with others to create a Global South Think Tanks Alliance to encourage people-to-people exchanges and share governance experiences.”

Attendees of the Meeting

The meeting was attended by leaders including Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as representatives from Brazil, India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia.

Also present were leaders and representatives from 25 invited countries, along with officials from international organizations, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and New Development Bank President Dilma Rousseff.

Xi returned to Beijing on Thursday.

Xi’s Key Remarks:

  • Peace and development continue to face significant challenges, and the path to prosperity for the Global South will be fraught with difficulties.
  • The Global South arises for development and thrives through it.
  • The diversity of civilizations is an inherent characteristic of the world.
  • Regardless of how the international landscape changes, China will always prioritize the Global South and remain rooted in its principles.
