Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has unveiled a comprehensive plan to strengthen Pakistan’s export capacity, particularly in cement and clinker, through major upgrades at Port Qasim.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the minister highlighted that a subcommittee led by Rear Admiral Syed Moazzam Ilyas, Chairman of the Port Qasim Authority, has finalised recommendations to expand the port’s infrastructure and streamline operations.
Key initiatives include the accelerated construction of two multi-purpose berths at Port Qasim, which will enhance its cargo handling capacity. Additionally, a new storage facility with a capacity of 30,000 metric tons will be built, with work expected to begin by late 2025.
To ensure smooth operations, permanent repair work on existing storage infrastructure will be completed by December 2025. The minister also revealed that the Port Qasim Authority will work closely with the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) to utilise the underused Sahiwal berth for clinker exports.
According to Junaid Anwar, these measures are part of a broader government strategy to modernise the maritime sector, strengthen logistics, and enhance Pakistan’s export competitiveness, paving the way for economic growth and trade development.
