PM vows fool-proof security for Chinese nationals

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reaffirmed that comprehensive security measures are being enforced across Pakistan to protect Chinese nationals, especially as bilateral cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) continues to expand.

During a high-level review meeting, the prime minister emphasized the government’s determination to upgrade security systems and surveillance in key urban areas, aiming to create a safe and business-conducive environment for Chinese residents and workers in the country.

Highlighting the deep friendship between Pakistan and China, Sharif stated that the protection of Chinese citizens remains a top priority. He added that a secure environment is essential for sustained cooperation and foreign investment.

As CPEC moves into its second phase, which emphasizes private sector-led and business-to-business initiatives, the prime minister noted that ensuring the security of Chinese personnel and infrastructure is now more crucial than ever.

Officials at the meeting shared updates on current security measures, which include the assignment of dedicated escorts, advanced surveillance in residential zones, and fast-tracked services at airports and border crossings for Chinese nationals. Coordination efforts between federal and provincial bodies were also discussed.

Sharif instructed relevant departments to speed up the rollout of Safe City projects across major cities and mandated that new housing schemes must incorporate surveillance systems in line with national standards.

The meeting was attended by key government figures including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, and SAPM Tariq Fatemi.

Stressing the importance of foreign confidence in Pakistan’s economy, the prime minister called on authorities to address any remaining gaps in the security framework protecting Chinese interests.

This renewed commitment follows the tragic incident on March 25, 2024, when five Chinese nationals working on the Dasu hydropower project were killed in a terrorist attack in Besham, Swat. In the aftermath, China had demanded a thorough investigation and robust security measures for its citizens in Pakistan.
