Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to formulate a coordinated strategy with provincial disaster management authorities to prevent tragedies like the recent incident in Swat.
He issued these directives while speaking at a ceremony during his visit to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the NDMA in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister also called for a detailed report on such incidents, noting that around 49 people have lost their lives and many others have been injured across the country.
Praising the advanced capabilities of the NEOC, he pledged full support to enhance the institution’s strength and capacity.
Shehbaz Sharif further revealed that he has already tasked Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Climate Change Minister Musadik Masood Malik with securing not loans, but grants and investments through public-private partnerships to help build climate-resilient infrastructure.
Regarding water security, and in response to India’s aggressive stance on the Indus Waters Treaty, the Prime Minister announced the construction of non-controversial water storage projects using domestic resources.
He noted that Pakistan has now, regrettably, joined the list of countries vulnerable to cloudbursts, despite having contributed little to global greenhouse gas emissions.
He stressed that the recent destruction caused by sudden glacial melt due to extreme heat highlights the urgent need for top-level preparedness.
