The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy hospital ship, Peace Ark, which docked in Colombo to offer free medical services to locals, has received widespread acclaim from Sri Lankan leaders and citizens for its medical proficiency, meticulous care, and commitment to patients.
The vessel arrived at the port of Colombo for a week-long goodwill visit starting December 21.
Expressing gratitude, the Sri Lankan prime minister, as quoted by China Military Online, thanked the Peace Ark on behalf of the Sri Lankan government and people for its visit.
During its stay, the ship’s medical platform was used to provide healthcare services while medical teams conducted outreach activities. The crew also engaged in recreational and sporting events with the Sri Lankan navy.
Sri Lankan lawmaker Amarasuriya visited the ship, interacted with Chinese doctors, learned about its medical services, and toured the ship’s various departments. She highlighted the Peace Ark as a symbol of Chinese goodwill, underlining the importance of such exchanges in fostering bilateral relations and improving public health, as reported by The Island Online.
The prime minister observed medical consultations conducted by the ship’s staff and praised the use of Chinese medical resources.
Advanced Equipment
The ship showcased advanced medical technology developed in China, which greatly impressed Amarasuriya, who praised the high-tech facilities and the expertise of the medical team.
Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, emphasized that the mission strengthens ties between the two nations. Indrananda Abeysekera, president of the Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation, commended China’s consistent global contributions, noting the Peace Ark embodies China’s kindness, support, and responsibility toward the world.
Abeysekera highlighted China’s historical assistance to Sri Lanka, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. This marked the Peace Ark’s second visit to Sri Lanka, following its first in 2017.
Strengthening Ties
Abeysekera expressed appreciation for the Chinese government and its agencies for arranging the ship’s visit to provide medical services. He emphasized the ship’s role in fostering medical expertise exchange, promoting naval cooperation, and enhancing cultural and people-to-people ties.
