Work has officially started on supplying 2 MW of electricity to the Pak-China Friendship Hospital (PCFH) in Gwadar as of January 11. This power supply will enable the hospital to run its medical equipment and departments at full efficiency.
PCFH Deputy Manager of Administration, Nadir Ali Baloch, told Gwadar Pro that progress followed the Gwadar Development Authority’s (GDA) approval of a private firm after the tendering process concluded last month.
Transmission lines will be installed from the main grid station to a dedicated feeder, ensuring a continuous power supply. Previously, the hospital relied partially on diesel generators, incurring an operational cost of Rs. 2 million monthly, according to a GDA official.
The lack of steady electricity has left much of the hospital’s heavy medical equipment non-operational. Despite this, since its inauguration in June 2024, the PCFH has provided free healthcare to over 212,000 patients from Gwadar and Balochistan, particularly benefiting women and children.
Built at a cost of $100 million funded by China under the CPEC framework, the 150-bed hospital boasts a fully functional outpatient department and has garnered widespread appreciation from locals.
Occupying 68 acres, the hospital includes six main blocks: medical, residential, nursing, paramedical institute, medical college, and central laboratory blocks. It also houses advanced medical equipment and comprehensive allied facilities.
Following its completion, the hospital was handed over to the GDA and is now operated by the Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of the local population.
