Pakistan sesame seed exports to China exceed $226m in 2024 given its improved quality and strong demand in Chinese market.
In 2024, Pakistan exported over $226 million worth of sesame seeds to China, marking a significant milestone in the trade relationship between the two countries. This increase highlights the growing demand for Pakistani agricultural products in the Chinese market and presents opportunities for further economic collaboration, as noted by Ghulam Qadir, Trade and Investment Counsellor at Pakistan’s Embassy in China.
Ghulam Qadir attributed the rise in sesame seed exports to improved agricultural practices, better quality control, and direct trade connections between Pakistani farmers and Chinese buyers. Pakistani sesame seeds, valued for their nutritional properties and versatile culinary uses, have gained popularity among Chinese consumers, fueling this surge in demand.
According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), China imported 177,640 tonnes of sesame seeds from Pakistan in 2024, amounting to $226.52 million. Chinese importers have expressed satisfaction with the seeds’ quality, widely utilized in cooking oil, snacks, and health products. Their health benefits, including high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, make them especially appealing to China’s health-conscious market.
Globally, China imported over 1.18 million tonnes of sesame seeds worth $1.86 billion in 2024. Niger, Tanzania, and Pakistan emerged as the top three exporters, with trade values of $514 million, $229 million, and $226 million, respectively, as reported by a wire service.
