Pakistani researcher makes strides in AI Innovation in China as he is developing an AI Assistant to generate illustrations from text.
At the Yangtze Delta Region Institute (Huzhou) of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Associate Researcher Kumar Raja is actively engaged in the Artificial Intelligence and Public Safety Research Center.
China is not new to Kumar, who hails from Karachi, Pakistan, a city that has undergone major infrastructure development due to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). “From road expansions to energy projects and port upgrades, Chinese companies have played a crucial role in transforming my hometown. The impact is visible throughout the city,” he said.
In 2016, Kumar enrolled at UESTC to pursue a Ph.D. in machine learning and information security. During his studies, he contributed to research projects funded by China’s National Natural Science Foundation. After completing his doctorate, he continued at UESTC as a postdoctoral researcher, publishing over 70 academic papers. By 2021, he had joined the Yangtze Delta Research Institute as an associate researcher.
“The institute’s research priorities closely match my academic interests. It provides valuable resources and collaboration opportunities, allowing me to apply my research to real-world challenges,” Kumar explained. Since joining, he has led multiple projects, filed several invention patents, and collaborated with institutions like Huzhou Central Hospital to facilitate technology transfer.
Currently, he is developing an AI-powered illustration generation system using a proprietary large language model. “Simply put, we are creating an ‘AI drawing assistant’ to help businesses and individuals generate illustrations from text descriptions,” he stated.
Kumar emphasized the transformative role of technological innovation in unlocking human potential and solving major challenges. “Creativity and adaptability are key,” he noted, expressing his enthusiasm for further AI collaborations with enterprises.
